Congressional Fellowships in Child Development 2008-2009
Application Deadline: December 15, 2007
Program and Criteria
The SRCD Congressional Fellowship program is designed to provide greater interaction between the developmental research community and Congress. Fellows spend one year working as a Legislative Assistant on the staff of a congressional committee, on the staff of a member of Congress, or in a congressional support agency that works directly for members or committees of Congress. Fellows may participate in activities such as drafting and preparing legislation, preparing or assisting in Congressional hearings, or preparing briefs and speeches. Following the two-week science policy orientation program at AAAS in September, Fellows interview with congressional offices to determine a placement. Currently, one Congressional Fellow each year is funded by a grant from the William T. Grant Foundation, and a second Fellow is funded by SRCD.
Award
Applications are reviewed by the fellowship selection subcommittee of the SRCD Committee on Policy and Communications. Applicants are evaluated on the basis of their research accomplishments, references, and written statement of interest. Candidates for interviews are then selected. Notification regarding interviews occurs in late January and interviews with the committee are held in late February or early March. SRCD will select up to two Fellows for one-year appointments to begin the first week of September. When candidates are notified that they have been selected for a Fellowship, they will have up to one week to accept the offer. Fellows' stipends begin at $67,000 depending on experience, which is determined by the Federal government pay scale. SRCD will provide each Fellow with a professional fund for moving expenses and professional travel, as well as an allowance for insurance benefits. Under certain circumstances, Congressional fellowships may be extended up to 16 months until the completion of a legislative session.
