Request for Proposals to Pursue SRCD’s Strategic Plan – Deadline: May 7, 2013

The Society is pleased to issue its fifth request for proposals for member-initiated research planning activities that address one or more goals of SRCD’s strategic plan. Prior competitions in 2008-2012 funded 16 diverse and creative projects that have benefited SRCD members in a number of ways (for a list of past funded projects, see Past Projects). The deadline for submissions is May 7, 2013.

SRCD’s Strategic Plan lists the following areas for attention:

  1. Increase appreciation for the fact that an understanding of development requires the perspectives and methods of multiple disciplines.
  2. Increase international perspectives on the study of child development.
  3. Increase cultural and contextual diversity in all aspects of the study of child development.
  4. Increase and strengthen communication of research findings to non-academic audiences (e.g., practitioners, parents, those responsible for developing and implementing educational and health policy) to promote their implementation.

We seek proposals for projects that address one or more of these goals. The size of awards will vary depending on the needs and goals of the proposed project but are generally expected to range between $10,000 and $20,000. Priority will be given to projects for which matching funds are either available or are being sought. In addition, priority will be given to proposals that will result in an intellectual product that will be broadly disseminated. Examples include books, edited volumes, and special issues of journals (including Child Development or Child Development Perspectives),webcast proceedings or a webinar that could be offered to members, as well as products designed for broader audiences of policymakers or practitioners.

Application Process

A cover sheet, set of guidelines, and budget form are attached. Only applications that use these forms and follow these guidelines will be reviewed. Generally the application should contain a description of the proposed project, including the background and significance of the problem, the goals of the project and how they fit with those of the Society as outlined in the Strategic Plan, and justification for the vehicle chosen to pursue the topic (conference, social media, etc.). The application should include a list of proposed participants with a description of their expected roles in the proposed project, a one page CV for each of the principal organizers, a timeline for completion of the proposed work, and a proposed budget. Budget items may include travel, supplies, and other costs directly related to the goals of the project. Indirect costs are not allowed, nor are honoraria or staff costs. Please also describe plans for securing matching funds and for dissemination of resulting products (e.g., edited volume, webinar) and products’ intended audience(s). Applications are limited to 750 words (not including CVs or budget), and should be submitted electronically through this submission site. The deadline for receipt of applications is May 7, 2013. Funding decisions will be made by July 1, 2013.
