Su Jiang, Ph.D.
Q: Can you write a couple of sentences on some aspect of your career development?
A: As an Asian female and former STEM student, my research is driven by a commitment to serving children and youth who are underserved and under-supported in their educational experiences. My own journey through STEM programs inspired me to study the experiences of female, minority, and first-generation students in STEM, specifically, how their motivation develops and how we can better support their achievement and persistence in the field.
Throughout my academic journey, I have been fortunate to have exceptional mentors. Their guidance taught me not only how to conduct rigorous research but also what it takes to be a successful scholar. This is the foundation of my advice to beginning scholars: do not limit your learning to your research alone. Focusing on the soft skills that sustain a long academic career and will carry you forward is also important, such as time management, task prioritization, and building supportive relationships and networks.
Q: Describe a particular recent finding, current study, or recent publication and what makes you excited about it.
A: In a recently accepted study in the Journal of Educational Psychology, I examined the effectiveness of a STEM value workshop for parents of Latinx STEM college students on parental support, STEM values, and family obligations. We provided a four-week virtual seminar via Zoom for parents that focused on the value of STEM education and provided university resources for STEM career pathways. Results showed that the STEM value workshop had a positive effect on parents’ engagement in STEM-related conversations while also reducing family obligations (e.g., running errands). These findings highlight how targeted interventions can create more supportive family environments for Latinx STEM students, thereby promoting academic success and persistence in STEM fields.
Q: Share your reflections on your interactions with the Asian Caucus.
A: As a member of the Asian Caucus and SRCD, I am grateful for the cohesive community, which has provided many opportunities for collaboration. I have also enjoyed learning about other members’ work through the member spotlights.
Q: Any upcoming talks or presentations we should know about?
A: I have completed my presentations for this year, but I will be at the SRCD Biennial Meeting in Atlanta next year. I hope to present my newest research and meet more Asian Caucus members in person.
