June 2025 Spotlight – Rosanne M. Jocson PhD

Description

This month, we are pleased to introduce Dr. Rosanne M. Jocson (rosanne.jocson@nie.edu.sg), Research Scientist at the Centre for Research in Child Development at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University.

Can you write a couple sentences on some aspect of your career development?

I started doing research in parenting and parent-child relationships when I joined the Parenting Across Cultures lab at Ateneo de Manila University. My experiences in this lab drew me to pursue a research-focused career and made me interested in the role of socioeconomic contexts in shaping parenting and child outcomes. During my doctoral studies at the University of Michigan, I continued to examine the effects of socioeconomic disadvantage and poverty-related risks on parents and children, and these studies introduced me to the extensive literature on risk and resilience. Over time, my focus shifted from examining risk factors to identifying protective factors that promote resilience and positive development, particularly in vulnerable families and children.

After completing my PhD, I returned to Manila for an opportunity to conduct intervention studies as Research Director of Parenting for Lifelong Health in the Philippines. It was a privilege to be part of a multi-sectoral team that worked together to adapt and evaluate a suite of parenting interventions that reached up to four million families. My role expanded my knowledge of implementation science and increased my appreciation of evidence-based interventions in enhancing children’s development.

I continue to conduct applied research and intervention studies in the field of early childhood education in my current position as a Research Scientist at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. I am deeply grateful to brilliant mentors who inspired and supported me over the years and helped lead me to this path, including Drs. Liane Alampay, Rosie Ceballo, and Vonnie McLoyd.

A short paragraph describing a particular recent finding, current study, or recent publication and what makes you excited about it.

In my current projects, I work closely with government agencies to develop and evaluate tools and interventions that can be implemented on a national scale to benefit preschool children, teachers, and parents. Working with different stakeholders can be challenging, but I am excited about the potential of these projects to enhance parenting, teaching practices, and children’s development on a broader scale.

Your reflections on your interactions with the Asian Caucus would be highly appreciated. Please feel free to share your thoughts, whether it’s a simple message for the Caucus community or more.

I always try to attend Asian Caucus gatherings in SRCD and find it as a supportive network of scholars. I look forward to attending more gatherings at future events and conferences.
