USC Center for Empowered Learning and Development
with Technology’s Annual Paper Camp for Graduate Students and Faculty

Under the leadership of Dr. Brendesha Tynes, the USC Center for Empowered Learning and Development with Technology (CELDTech) is hosting the Development with Media and Technology Paper Camp for Graduate Students and Faculty, a 10-day hybrid writing camp, this summer from June 15-July 2, 2019. The purpose of this paper camp is to forge a community of graduate students and faculty that will conduct methodologically rigorous research on the impact of digital media on adolescent and emerging adult development.

The paper camp will include a 10-day intensive writing and training program which will begin at least three weeks prior with IRB approval, a literature search and data analyses. The 10 days will have three one-hour meetings online (June 15, 16, and 17th) and a 7-day residency at USC from June 25th – July 2nd. For the paper camp, participants will choose to work on either the Teen Life Online and in Schools Project, the National Survey of Critical Media Literacy (pilot data), the Liberatory Media Literacy Scale or the Digital Equity Project dataset. Dr. Tynes will support participants through the writing process as either lead authors or coll. All participants will be required to have at least one manuscript submitted by the end of fall semester 2019. During the paper camp, attendees will also participate in professional development, self-care (including meditation exercises to reduce stress) and other team activities around the beautiful city of Los Angeles.

Selected participants will receive transportation to Los Angeles, CA and housing. Additionally, incentives and prizes will be awarded for manuscript completion. We are looking for scholars with coursework and/or research experience examining populations of color as well as training in quantitative/mixed-methods analyses. TO APPLY, please submit a 250-word bio and CV to btynes@usc.edu by May 10, 2019. Following an initial review of applications, selected participants will be asked to submit a one-page statement of interest that will include ideas for manuscripts to be completed during the camp and how attending the paper camp will contribute to your professional goals.

For questions or concerns, please contact Brendesha Tynes at btynes@usc.edu.
