A Note from SRCD’s Executive Director, Saima K. Hedrick

Yet again, our nation is dealing with the aftermath of another tragic shooting. This time, the violence took place in an elementary school in Ulvade, Texas and we are devastated at the loss of precious young children and their teachers. In the words of President Nancy E. Hill, “We are heartbroken and stunned.” On the heels of the racist mass shooting in Buffalo, NY, SRCD grieves with both local communities and the nation for all who lost their lives and offer support to the families who lost loved ones. To mobilize change, we urge our members to share research findings that support healing and other solutions to end gun violence widely with their communities, advocacy organizations, policymakers, and others who may not be aware of the deleterious effects of trauma on children.

I was so grateful to have the opportunity to finally meet so many of you during the 2022 Special Topic Meetings this spring at “Learning through Play and Imagination: Expanding Perspectives” in St. Louis, Missouri and at “Construction of the ‘Other’: Development, Consequences, and Applied Implications of Prejudice and Discrimination” in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.  I hope you enjoyed the panel discussions, reconnecting with your colleagues, and perhaps a change in location following two years in your homes! I’d like to thank the meeting organizers Cynthia García Coll, Gustavo Carlo, Linda C. Halgunseth, Lisa M. López, Norma J. Perez-Brena, Thalia R. Goldstein, Deena Weisberg, Jacob Schatz, and SRCD’s meetings and events team Natasha Ross and Julia Johnson for all their hard work on both these meetings. Can’t wait to do it all over again in the fall for the “Holistic Developmental Science Toward a Holistic Developmental Science: Catalyzing Transdisciplinary Multi-Sector Collaborations to Understand and Support Human Development” in St. Louis, Missouri!

Finally, my heart is with all the families with infants struggling with access to formula. Please share this guide from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on how to find formula during this crisis. If you have ideas on how SRCD can help, please email me at Shedrick@srcd.org

Sincerely,
Saima
